I relapsed. I eat fry food, a little bit cheese here and there, sugary drinks, food additives, too little veggies, too much carbs, too much fishūüėě It’s difficult not to eat the restricted food when you’re invited to dinner by family, almost every day. I started to loosen my diet restrictions, stop exercising , not even walking, and 2 months later I’m crying because of severe pain, short menstrual cycle, and feel depressed.

TENS Unit to Relieve Menstrual Pain

Sometime last year, my Ayurvedic doctor shared me a post on Instagram about acupressure to relieve menstrual pain. I tried it, it works. But the thing is, when you’re in pain, you don’t want to massage yourself for 30 minutes straight. Ideally, you just want to relax and someone else will do it for you. But what if you’re all alone at home while you’re in pain? I came up with a solution for it. Yep, I bought a TENS unit!!!

What is a TENS unit?

TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is a device that sends small electrical currents to targeted body parts, which are predominately used for pain relief and the treatment of pain and nerve related pain conditions (acute and chronic conditions).

I bought a rechargeable version for 168 yuan (about USD24.00). Yes, the buttons are all on Chinese. I had to translate each word into English to make sure that I have the correct mode. My favorite is the “continuous¬†massage” option and I only use that all of these times. The other 11 options are useless! LOL

How do you use it to relieve menstrual pain?

There are some acupressure points that will help to relieve symptoms related to menstrual pain that causes by Adenomyosis, Endometriosis, or Fibroid. For me, I use it to relieve cramps and back pain when I’m having menstruation or ovulation.

To relieve your pain, all you have to do is to put each of the electrodes patches to certain acupressure¬†points and turn on the TENS unit. I usually do it as long as I have pain. I’m not sure whether that would be dangerous, I don’t really care, as long as the pain is gone! LOL

These are my favorite points to relieve cramps or ovaries pain:

I need to warn you that massaging or put TENS patches on these points could be quite painful when you’re having menstrual pain¬†but believe me, your menstrual pain will be relieved.

SanYinJiao (SP6)
SP 6 Clinical Usages
  • Tonify Yin and Blood, all Spleen disorders.
  • Digestive disorders, sinking/prolapse.
  • Gynecological issues, male sexual issues, difficult labor (expel fetus).
  • Menstrual issues (irregular, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea).
  • Bleeding disorders, uterine bleeding, cool blood in hot skin diseases.
  • Insomnia, palpitations, and other anxiety-related emotions.
  • Dizziness, hypertension.
ZuSanLi (ST36)
ST 36 Clinical Usages
  • Tonify deficient Qi a/or Blood.
  • Tonify Wei Qi and Qi overall – low immunity, chronic illness, poor digestion, general weakness, particularly with¬†moxibustion, a¬†very important acupuncture point for building and maintaining overall health.
  • All issues involving the Stomach a/or the Spleen – abdominal/epigastric pain, borborygmus, bloating, nausea, vomiting, GERD, hiccups, diarrhea, constipation, etc.
  • Clear disorders along the course of the channel – breast problems, lower leg pain.
  • Earth¬†as the mother of¬†Metal¬†– will support Lung function in cases of asthma, wheezing, dyspnea.

GuanYuan (CV4)
CV 4 Clinical Usages
  • Generally, useful for deficiencies of Yin, Yang, Qi & Blood.
  • The main point for tonifying Prenatal Qi – exhaustion, weakness, chronic fatigue/diseases.
  • The main point for Kidney deficiencies of Qi, Jing a/or Yang – low back pain, bone disorders, early morning (5 a.m., “cock-crow”) diarrhea. rectal prolapse.
  • Genito-urinary issues with Deficient a/or Cold Patterns – incontinence, clear copious urine, nocturia.
  • The main point for all menstrual disorders with Deficient, Cold a/or Stagnation Patterns – scanty menstruation, pale blood.
  • Sexual / Fertility Issues – infertility, impotence, seminal emission, amenorrhea, bleeding during pregnancy.
  • Yang collapse – chills, profuse sweating, SOB, unconsciousness.

  • Tonify ST/SP Qi Deficiencies.
  • The main point for prolapse of any type – rectum, uterus, etc.¬† Lower abdominal and/or genital pain swelling.
  • Stroke, loss of consciousness, weakness of the muscles and body generally.
  • Tong Ren/Tam Healing System: Main point for building and storing Qi (energy), useful for deficiency conditions – asthma, shortness of breath, general fatigue, etc.

ChongMen (SP12)
SP 12 Clinical Usages
  • Used for a variety of urinary disorders (retention, painful) due to its functions of draining dampness, clearing heat and regulating urination.
  • Abdominal pain, hernia, hemorrhoids by regulating qi and invigorating blood.
FuShe (SP13)
SP 13 Clinical Usages
  • Abdominal pain, abdominal masses (fibroids, cysts, etc.), hernia, thigh pain – regulates the liver, qi, and alleviates pain.

ShenShu (UB23)
UB 23 Clinical Usages
  • For all¬†Kidney system¬†related issues from a Chinese Medicine perspective which affect the brain, bone, hair, teeth a/or hearing.
  • Male deficiency related sexual problems: impotence, premature ejaculation, spermatorrhea, sterility, exhaustion following ejaculation.
  • Female sexual and reproductive disorders: irregular cycles, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, cold uterus, frigidity, infertility, leukorrhea.
  • Tonification point in deficiency conditions: exhaustion, weakness, chronic fatigue, good point for the elderly as Kidney Jing is naturally depleted.
  • The main point for acute or chronic low back pain, sprains a/or strains.
  • Useful for KD related ear issues: tinnitus, deafness, chronic ear infections.
  • Useful for dampness issues and water metabolism issues – edema, fluid retentions in the lower abdomen.
  • As the kidney system provides the root of the bodies energy many psychological conditions will respond well to tonification of this point as well – depression, anxiety disorders.
DaChangShu (UB25)
UB 25 Clinical Usages
  • Main point for low back pain especially when related to constipation a/or menstruation. Combine with local points such as¬†GV 3,¬†UB 26,¬†Shiqizhui¬†(between L5 and S1),¬†UB 31,¬†UB 32,¬†GB 30¬†& distal points such as¬†GB 34,¬†GB 39,¬†GB 41,¬†UB 40,¬†UB 57,¬†UB 58,¬†UB 60¬†&¬†UB 62.
  • The main point for all intestine related issues: constipation, diarrhea, dysentery, colitis, IBS, etc.
  • Regulates the function in the colon so as potential uses for poor assimilation, limited weight gain despite eating many calories.

Rectum pain

For rectum pain, I usually put the patches on UB27-34 and UB48 points. Its really help!

I bought mine on Taobao.com which practically the Amazon of China. But if you live in the US or other countries, Amazon will be the best place to buy it.

There are two kinds of TENS unit, one that is rechargeable and the other one is use battery. Me, personally choose the one that rechargeable. Something like these:

Hello July!

It’s been 2 months since my last post and these last 2 months have been a crazy month! Let’s catch up a little bit, shall we?

US Visa

I traveled to Shanghai and Guangzhou several times to deal with my US immigrant visa. It was exhausting and very stressful! But the good news is, I got the visa, yay! We will move to the states by the end of this month ^_^

Cats

I rescued a 3 months old kitten at the end¬†of May. He has ringworms all over his body and also ear mites in his ears. I treated his ear mites¬†for 3 weeks, the vet told me he was cleared, but guess what? The mites came back as soon as I stop the medication, LOL. Now I have to do the whole process again… plus he still has ringworms. I have another cat that I rescued 5 years ago. I tried my best to separate those two. I even quarantine the new cat in a separate room, but guess what? My older cat got ear mites from him! Oh God, it’s so frustrating coz my older cat is very cranky and difficult to handle -_-”

Pain

In May-June, I had 32 days cycle, this is a new record. I’m not sure it’s a good or a bad thing. Out of the 32 days, I have 15 pain-free days and 6 days of discomfort. I think it’s the best pain-free record for the last 2 years.

In June-July, I had 27 days cycle. Out of 27 days, I have 12 pain-free days and 3 days of discomfort. The cycle was shortened, I guess it’s because of the moving stress and also I ate eggs and duck a couple times. I also ate goat cheese to check whether I was sensitive to it. The result was I’m a little sensitive to it but¬†not as bad as cow cheese. So I think a little amount of goat cheese, once in awhile will do no harm for me.

I have less rectum pain and sciatic pain. Last month I had no sciatic pain at all, yay! I’m on day 6 of my period right now, so we will see what’s going to happen this month :p

I had stomach irritation these last 3 days because of the painkillers. I always take Diclofenac with Domperidone to help to ease any possible stomach irritation, but apparently, 3-4x50mg diclofenac+domperidone a day for two days was too much for my stomach. I had to take 1 tablespoon of olive oil before I eat and also I only eat rice porridge and soup to help my stomach to heal.

Adeno/Endo Diet

I think this month I didn’t do the Adeno/Endo diet as well as the previous month. I had constipation for about 2 weeks, I’m pretty sure I drank lots of fluids, so I’m not sure what caused it.

Exercise

I barely do yoga but I did lots of walking.

Energy

There are some days that I felt exhausted. The travels really drained my energy, but in general, I think I have pretty good energy level.

Supplements

I’m still taking the same supplements as the previous months.

For Spirulina I take 9x500mg per day, sometimes I take more If I feel discomfort. It’s a good alternative for a¬†painkiller for me¬†but only work for light pain or discomfort. I also take red raspberry leaf tea for any uterus discomfort or light pain.


So far, the diet and supplements really help with the pain. Stress management is still hard for me. I will try my best to do better this month.

Day 30

It’s been a month since my last update on this blog, I think I have a good news to share. I reached the 30th day of my monthly cycle. It’s a miracle! I have never reached Day 30 of my cycle these last 5 years!

As I mentioned before on my old post, I started to develop Adenomyosis symptoms when I moved to China in 2013. Since then, my cycles had shortened from 28-30 days cycle to 23-25 days. It’s tiring when you have menstruated most of the time and you have to feel the pain on that time.

So, let’s talk about what’s going on these last 30 days

Less Pain, Yay!

I have more pain-free days compare to my last cycle. Including this morning, I have 10 pain-free days compare to 3 pain-free days on my last cycle.

Cycle Length

Last cycle: 24 days

Current cycle: 30 days and still counting

Endo/Adeno Diet

  • I eat better this cycle, more greens, orange, and red vegetable.
  • Completely cut off dairy, wheat, eggs, and all meats except fish
  • Sugar: almost cut off completely, I only take a little sugar from fruit and raw honey (1tsp per day)
  • I drink plenty of fluid: in average 1.3L-2L of lemon water every day + 0.5L plain water + 0.7L of herbal teas (raspberry leaf tea + Yogi’s women moon cycle/kava/other herbal teas)
  • A limited amount of fruits. I’m avoiding fruits that taste too sweet for me, such as oranges. Bananas (1pc/day), mangoes(1 small-medium), pineapple(the max is quarter of the fruit), and apple(1 small-medium) are fine. Any fruit that not too sweet is fine.
  • Tempeh is a NO NO for me. I ate 3 small slices of Tempeh as a test for food sensitivity 2 weeks ago, 30 minutes later I had cramps, lower back pain, and rectum pain. FYI, I’m from Indonesia, for Indonesian, Tempeh is one of the main food that common people eat every day. I really missed to eat it. I have been avoiding to eat¬†it these last 2 years because it made of fermented soy. I read that the oestrogen level is lower when a soy product is fermented that’s why I gave it a try again. The answer was, my body is too sensitive to any kind of soy product including the fermented product. This reality made me feel very sad.

Exercise

Well, I didn’t do very well with the exercise effort. I could only do 2-3 times of yoga/walk in a week. I will do better, promise.

Energy

I have more energy these last few weeks, I think the supplements regime started to show the result! Yay!

Supplements

Serrapeptase

I increased my¬†Serrapeptase dosage from 3×40,000IU to 6×40,000IU per day. The first week after I increased the dosage something happened to my body. My stomach swelled so big and it felt really hard when I touched it, almost like a stone! I also felt pain in my both ovaries (felt like someone squeezed my ovaries really hard!) and also my rectum (squeezed and stabbed pain). These pain last for about a week, but the swelled belly last for about 10 days. I’m not sure it was a good sign that Serrapeptase fighting the Endometrioma/Adenomyosis/Fibroid or something else. I wouldn’t know until I have my next sonogram.

Btw, I lost my weight again, mostly the fat from my stomach. Now I can see and feel with my hands how swollen my uterus is and how swollen my ovaries are, it’s amazing and scary at the same time. You can feel it there, your enemies, laughing… hijacking your body, ready to twist your ovaries at any time…

Spirulina

I started taking Spirulina 11 days ago. The one that I bought is 500mg tablets Organic Spirulina from Healthy Origins. I started with 1 tab x 2 per day and now I’m on 2 tabs x 3 per day. The first day of taking Spirulina I felt feverish, I read it’s a¬†¬†normal reaction for some people because it’s high in protein content that increases metabolism which may elevate the body temperature. I also have the same reaction on the day I increased the dosage to 2 tab x 3 per day.

Spirulina has so many benefits for our body, but the benefits that really caught my attention are it regulates the menstrual cycle, relieve pre-menstrual syndromes, support immune system, and support the growth of healthy bacteria in our guts. These benefits are essential for people like me, who is living with Adenomyosis, Endometriosis, and Fibroid.

I’m quite sure that Spirulina is of the causes that I have a¬†longer cycle this month, but to prove my theory, I have to wait until few more cycles to see whether I still have longer cycles.

I still have a long way ahead of me, I’m not sure whether all of these efforts will get rid of my fibroid and endometriomas, or shrink my uterus because of the damaged that caused by Adeno. We will see in few months! Meanwhile… I feel grateful because I have less pain and I have more energy.
